Windows Server 2016 ESU planning comparison

This Windows Server 2016 ESU comparison uses your current quote to compare a temporary Extended Security Updates bridge, an in-place upgrade, and a side-by-side migration. The tool uses only amounts you enter; it does not decide which path is right or estimate Azure bills.

What Microsoft documents

Microsoft's Windows Server 2016 lifecycle entry displays the extended-support end timestamp as 13 January 2027 at 6:59:59 AM Pacific Time. Microsoft's Windows Server 2016 ESU guidance and planning page state 12 January 2027, with Azure Arc ESU billing beginning 13 January. Check Microsoft's current lifecycle and ESU pages for your region and licensing decision. Microsoft documents Windows Server 2016 ESUs through Azure Arc and Commercial Licensing. The ESU program covers Critical and Important security updates for up to three years; it does not add features or general product support. For on-premises and hosted servers, Microsoft requires conformance with Software Assurance (SA) or an equivalent server subscription. For Windows Server 2016 machines licensed through SPLA or a server subscription, Microsoft says SA is not required to purchase ESUs. Microsoft also says the Visual Studio subscription no-cost dev/test benefit and no-cost disaster-recovery benefit are unavailable for Windows Server 2016 ESUs.

  • Windows Server 2016 Standard and Datacenter are eligible for Arc ESU. Microsoft says Arc ESU configuration opened 3 August 2026 and billing begins 13 January 2027.
  • Arc ESU is billed monthly by provisioned cores and edition. The price depends on your quote and any eligible discounts. Microsoft does not publish a Windows Server 2016 ESU amount in the cited pages; this planner requires your current quote.
  • For Arc licensing, physical-core licensing has a 16-core minimum per machine. Virtual-core licensing has an 8-core minimum per VM and uses Standard. This estimate assumes one counted VM per server when virtual cores are selected.
  • Commercial Licensing ESU SKUs use annual coverage periods; Microsoft says a later-year SKU requires the prior year's ESU license. Confirm eligibility and the purchase sequence with your licensing partner.
  • The Arc ESU source describes coverage “through 2030.” Confirm exact coverage dates, eligibility and terms with Microsoft or your licensing partner.

Do not treat ESU as a permanent destination. It covers specified security updates, not new features or general support. Check application and role support before selecting an upgrade target or migration destination.

How it works

Enter the number of servers or VMs, a licensing basis, a comparison period and your current ESU, upgrade and destination quotes. The browser applies the documented core minimums and shows comparable totals only when the needed quotes are present. It does not rank options or assess compatibility.
