On-Prem AD vs Hybrid vs Azure AD Join: Key Differences

Compare on-premises AD domain join, Microsoft Entra join and hybrid join. Learn how registration differs, what each model needs, and how to choose.

On-prem AD vs hybrid vs Azure AD join: what changes?

Reviewed: 4 November 2026. “Azure AD join” remains a familiar search phrase. Microsoft renamed Azure Active Directory to Microsoft Entra ID in 2023, so current documentation and product labels use Microsoft Entra. This comparison keeps the older term in the title for people searching for it, then uses current names below.

The short answer: these are different device identity relationships, not three names for the same cloud migration. Domain join connects a Windows device to Windows Server Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). Microsoft Entra join connects an organization-owned device to Entra ID without joining it to an on-premises AD domain. Microsoft Entra hybrid join connects the device to on-premises AD DS and registers it with Entra ID. A separate state, Microsoft Entra registration, gives a device an identity in Entra without joining it to either directory.

The phrase Active Directory domain join describes the traditional AD DS relationship; it does not describe Microsoft Entra registration or Microsoft Entra join alone.

At a glance

Device stateDirectory relationshipWhat to plan for
AD DS domain joinedJoined to an on-premises AD DS domainDomain controllers, domain policy, applications and network paths that rely on AD DS
Microsoft Entra joinedJoined to Entra ID onlyCloud identity and a separately selected management approach, such as Intune
Microsoft Entra hybrid joinedJoined to AD DS and registered with Entra IDExisting domain dependencies plus Entra registration and the required synchronization/configuration
Microsoft Entra registeredRegistered with Entra ID; not domain joinedCommonly a personal or BYOD identity scenario; it is not the same as Entra join

Microsoft distinguishes these device identities in its device identity overview, Entra join guide, and hybrid join guide.

What on-premises AD domain join provides

An AD DS domain-joined computer has a computer account in the on-premises domain. Organizations may rely on that relationship for Group Policy, domain-based authentication, machine accounts, file or application access, and established provisioning workflows. Identify exact dependencies, such as policy refresh, domain authentication or access to a particular server.

What Microsoft Entra join changes

A Microsoft Entra joined device is joined to Entra ID only. Users can use their organizational account to sign in, and Entra joined devices can access supported on-premises resources in appropriate configurations. Access to a particular legacy app or resource still depends on its authentication and network prerequisites.

Join state and management are separate decisions. Microsoft documents mobile device management (MDM), including Microsoft Intune, and co-management with Configuration Manager. Entra join does not recreate every GPO, script, imaging workflow or application dependency; map each requirement to a supported control and test it before moving devices.

What hybrid join retains

A Microsoft Entra hybrid joined device is joined to on-premises Windows Server AD and registered with Entra ID. It can provide Entra device identity while retaining AD DS workflows. Microsoft states that hybrid joined Windows devices need periodic line-of-sight to on-premises domain controllers; plan for that and the domain, DNS and synchronization prerequisites.

Hybrid join keeps on-premises responsibilities in scope. Microsoft describes it as an interim step in some modernization guidance, not a universal deadline for every organization. Choose based on requirements and a tested roadmap.

How to choose

  1. List dependencies. Identify apps using AD computer authentication, Group Policy, domain resources, scripts, certificates or existing deployment processes. Confirm with application owners; age alone does not prove a dependency.
  2. Check management. Decide how configuration, compliance, updates, security and support will work. Test the relevant Intune or Configuration Manager policies instead of assuming a one-for-one GPO mapping.
  3. Test access paths. Test sign-in and required resources from office, remote and disconnected conditions. Record where VPN, domain-controller reachability or application changes are needed.
  4. Pilot. Compare provisioning options, test representative devices and document issues, owners, rollback criteria and evidence needed before expanding.

Microsoft recommends cloud-native Microsoft Entra join for new Windows Autopilot deployments. Some Autopilot scenarios support hybrid join for environments that need them. See Windows Autopilot requirements.

Keep the decision specific

Entra join may fit a cloud-first device with no blocking AD DS dependency and a validated management plan. Hybrid join may fit while a required workflow depends on domain membership; registration may suit personal-device access. These are starting points, not universal recommendations.

The on-premises AD to Entra hybrid pre-migration checklist covers directory and synchronization planning. Pilot before changing join state broadly.

  • OPERATION TYPE: Read-only Microsoft 365 service-health pilot; Azure inventory is limited to its separately approved resource group.
  • DATA HANDLING: Page-view analytics use fixed page labels and aggregate counts. Pilot OAuth tokens use in-memory MSAL storage and clear on refresh or close. Hosting logs are separate.
